Go out at night with a torch and cut the slugs you find, in half. Alternatively pop cut-in-half plastic bottles over the plants with the top removed, which may give some protection.
If you spread the slug pellets as thinly as it says on the container, it is unlikely the dogs will pick them up.
I have a terrible time with slugs and snails. I also use old milk cartons and juice bottles cut them in half and put copper tape around, also gone out at night with a torch and bucket. I`m trying something new at the moment called slug go its made up off sheeps wool made into pellets apariantly the slugs will not cross it so you put the pellets around the plant water it and the pellets swell forming a barrier. Its totally organic doesn't hurt the slugs and eventually rots back into the ground and feeds the plant. I hate using the blue pellets, I have lots of frogs and toads also dogs so its a defo no go.
The wool pellets are very good and harmless to pets try those. The other more expensive but highly effective control is using nematodes just water them in over the ground and it will sort the problem. However to be fully effective you need to treat the area every 6-12wks throughout the season
Brilliant advice, thank you all so much x
I'm also trying the sheeps wool stuff on my pots of lilies - it's proving successful
