slug topped lilies

one of my lilies has been badly damaged, its had most of its emerging shoot eaten, now rot has set in and the shoot is dying off.

what should i do? obviously i dont want to let the rot get down to the bulb. will it send out a new shoot? should i dig it up and force dormancy? then re plant later?

thanks.

I'd cut the rotten shoot off Robert if it's really decimated. Unfortunately they're very prone to slug and snail damage. If you can use some form of slug control until the plant gets a little bit of growth on it that will help, though it's doubtful it'll recover for this year. If it's in the ground it might be worth lifting and potting it as it's often easier to keep slugs under control in pots.

  • it did try to grow but the recent wet weather harboured too much moisture in the 'earth matters' slug repellant and its rotted good n proper.

i have lifted it and potted it.

the same variety (forever susan) i planted in tubs are doing much better then the ones in the soil...

Good luck with it Robert - it may not make it but worth having a go.  I always grew my lilies in pots because they were slug magnets in the ground, even with sharp grit round them, and like you, wet soil was always tricky . I then started growing the Longiflorum ones and found them to be more resistant. I had some in a large square metal container which I lined with polysterene. Slugs never touched them.

  • dug up 3 damaged ones. bulbs are in great condition, firm healthy, but in all cases the shoots were rotting after damage. ive got 80 odd up and healthy, 30 odd in pots. there are still about 15 yet to surface. dunno why they havnt shooted maybe slugs got them in the ground, maybe they just havnt shot.

thanks... has anyone else got any ideas?

  • ok... found aload more damaged ones. i dug up where i knew i had some bulbs only to find the tops of the shoots rotting presumably after slug damage.

quite anoying really, ive dug up the bulbs and potted them in sharp sand and ji#2 as recommended. see if anything will come.

one bulb is severely damaged, anyone know the best way to recover it?
