Timber Greenhouse

plotskierplotskier Posts: 65

My father has an old wooden greenhouse (16' x 8' ) which he built himself about 30 years ago . The wooden roof struts coming off the ridge , are bedded into putty and the 2' square glass(3mm) panes laid on top. Whenever it rains, it leaks into the greenhouse, mainly at the sides and the edges of the greenhouse. Can anyone suggest a course of action to seal the greenhouse?

Bruce, if you go to a glazier they have a silicone glazing sealant, very similar to Pansyface's bath sealant, which fits to a skeleton gun. Around £4 for the tube which will do loads if you are just touching up.

Thanks for your advice. I've tried that before but it didn't work. I think I'll have to strip down the wood when it's drier (August) and seal the wood then use the silicone sealer gun. The only thing that concerns me is cracking the panes if I use ladders. My father used to do it himself using a long span of wood across the thin roof laths. I'll ask him again.

Yes, I know, it's pretty fragile. I 've aquired a friend's greenhouse for my allotment , an 8' x 6'  - it's aluminium. I've broken about 6 panes whilst transporting it to the plot. My father's greenhouse was painted last year and they broke 5 panes. It 's a big restoration job. Just wondered if anyone else had a wooden greenhouse and how they would repair leaks and paint it safely.

    Hello,

I would use a gun applied mastic or possibly lead and gutter sealant but there is nothing wrong with good old fashioned putty. Whatever you use scrape any loose putty and rotten timber out first and apply a coat of acrylic wood primer  it is water based and dries very quick. Ronseal also do a two part pack that hardens rotten timber and  a filler to repair the damaged area. Joncryl is the best acrylic wood primer /undercoat I have ever used.

    Cheers...............Merlot.

I am not very bright but I can lift heavy things.

    Hello.

I have just remembered that you cant paint lead and gutter sealant and silicone sealant will flake off if you paint it.

    Cheers..............Merlot.
