Can anyone tell me what this insect is

I watched this emerging this morning. The body is approx 2.5 cm long. Is it going to eat all the new bamboo shoots?

Daddy Long Legs - Crane Fly -   it won't eat much if anything, but if it mates and lays eggs they will turn into the dreaded leatherjackets which will munch the roots of your lawn.

Mind you, the odds are that your particular Crane Fly will go to feed some baby robins  image

Not sure what it is but by the length of its legs I think it would struggle to get in close to eat young shoots, looks more like it should be on water.

A crane fly, the starlings love to eat the grubs ,they are usual about  autumn time and they do not live long and don't do any harm .image

  • Thanks for replies. Am a bit image at not knowing it was a crane fly, my excuse is that I've only ever seen them fully grown and flying about!
