what does the term 'growth checked' mean and how can it be prevented?

Hi Jenny
It means that for some reason the plant's growth has slowed down - it could be due to lack of water, lack of nutrition in the soil or a sudden change in temperature or something else.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
ah I thought perhaps that's what it meant, just wanted to be sure - thank you
