Baffling a squirrel. happy days

I have to say we invested in a proper bird feeding station and squirrel baffler.  What fun it has been for us all to sit back and watch the squirrel trying to figure it out.  You can literally see his brain ticking over as he is climbing up trees trying to figure if he can get to it from above, from the side haha.

Now hopefully some birds will get to eat their food and then we need to work on getting new birds in.  How to do that ?

Different types of food would be my first step Peanuts. You'll find lots of different mixes available in GCs etc and also online. It'll also depend what birds are local to your area and situation.  I mainly use sunflower hearts, robin food and mixes for blue tits, and I steer clear of the mixes with the full sunflower seeds as it's less messy - no waste. Buy better quality  stuff too - the cheaper mixes are padded out with barley which just attracts lots of pigeons. In hard weather  blackbirds will love apples put out for them, and I put out mealworms at this time of year too. Remember some birds are only ground feeders so you might want to put food directly on the ground or a suitable area for them  image

When I worked, in the garden outside my office window we had one of those wrought iron shepherds crook poles to hang bird feeders on - squirrels learned to shin up the pole - until I greased it with some olive oil .................. the look on his face as he kept sliding down was hysterical imageimageimage

oh no I just saw the squirrel had got past the baffler.  Now I need to figure out how he did it, I'm going to have to stalk it.  Might be greasing the pole with olive oil at this rate.

Hmmm, just saw it jump about 5ft from a rhodo bush nearby.  may have to move the pole.  Would be a great photo, if only i could capture it.  time to go dig out my zoom lens

We had a bird feeder full of sunflower hearts hanging from a small cherry tree - one morning I looked out of the office window and saw a squirrel had pulled the top off the feeder and had his head stuck down the tube scoffing the sunflower hearts like there was no tomorrow - when I dashed out yelling and blaspheming about my bank balance he had a hard time getting his head out - it would've served him right ..................... but then what would I have done image

They're determined little b****** aren't they? I saw a tv prog a few years ago where the owners had erected an assault course in an attempt to see how far they could go with trying to out fox them. It was hilarious!

We don't have any squirrels around here, not right habitat for them. There are red squirrels n the Island although I've not seen them. We have rats in the garden, kind of like squirrels but with bald tails - haha! Most people hate rats but I like them. Very entertaining to watch.

Get a feeder for the squirrel that helps keep them to there own area, I have a few interesting watching them lift the lid to get to the food
