Lupin border, but what else
in Plants
My partner dug a long 20ish foot border this weekend and wants to put his purple lupins in. But what else will go and elongate the flowering season?? Help. Border is only 2 ft wide so I expect we will be billowing over. We like the cottage look. Thanks

There are masses of plants with a cottagy look. Geraniums - I like Rozanne and Psilostemon, Veronicas, phlox, penstemons, dahlias, perennial salvias etc While the perennials are young you could always add some annuals in between.
He nearly broke his back digging out sods of clay and replacing with decent soil. Just have to order a skip.
i have just been to b&q and the silly sods have put stupid prices on their yellow label section. 6 foxgloves for £1 a big delph for £1. So I'm the new owner of ...
8 delphiniums
18 foxgloves
2geums
1 astilbe (massive 8 inch pot)
12 dianthus
all for the bargain price of £17. Wonder if they will be ok and hold each other up... Eeek, didn't think that far!!!
why do b&q never water things!!!!!
Well not sure I want that many but we will see! I couldnt resist at that price!
You could put in wigwams of canes and make use of the sky between the lupins too
Sorry chicky I don't understand, been a long day!!
Red - sorry, didn't mean to be cryptic. Just meant that you might be able to squeeze some tripods of canes between the lupins and use them to grow climbers up, and make use of the empty space ("sky") above your new border. You could try with sweetpeas this year to see if you like the effect, and move on to something perennial next year if it works as a look.
Thanks chicly, got you now!!!
verdun that was my worry, they look great when in bloom but then what. Do I just sod it and cut right down and pack with the 40 dahlias I'm protecting from frost. It's not even planted yet so I bet this year will be disappointing!!!
I mi have all foxgloves, delph's and dahlias but will it look showy or just newly panted! Maybe some fed ding dahlias to pack the gaps!
My lupines are about three quarters of a foot talk, will they make flowering plants this year??
