Apple tree companions

I planted a Braeburn Apple tree last year. My local GC sold me a Katya apple tree as a cross pollinator, explaining they are a suitable group to match with the Braeburn.

The Katya apple tree has really come on well and has loads of white blossom, it looks really healthy and is growing well. However, whilst the Braeburn is in leaf and looking healthy it has no flowers at all. Is this normal? Is it possibly down to it being its first year in the ground, or does it blossom later in the spring?

surely to cross pollinate it should be in flower alongside the Katya ?

do both trees self pollinate anyway?

My braeburn is blooming too, but I don't think it did for the first couple of years, but then it was very small - bought it in Morrisons for a fiver.  Last year was disappointing, and the year before the blossom got frosted off, but I summer pruned last July time, and this year the blossom is a far better show, so maybe, depending on the size of yours a bit of summer pruning wouldn't go amiss.  Also, make sure you water in dry periods, as reproduction will be the last thing on its mind if the roots are dry.

If your Braeburn is in leaf with no flower or sign of buds, then it isn't going to flower this year. You need patience with fruit trees I'm afraid, It's taken three years for some of mine to flower and others flowered in the next year after planting. Different trees, different location, different conditions, different rootstocks, all play a part. It will catch up.
