It looked a bit like bacterial cranker, there is an excess of dead wood around the tree and the bark is peeling everywhere. I'm still concerned, thanks for the feedback however!
In July cut out the dead wood and any branches with signs of canker; also take out any branches which are crossing each other.
I'd also clear a bit of the undergrowth now and give it a dose of Fish Blood & Bone. It looks like an old tree - can we have a picture of the whole tree please?

No, don't hard prune or even 'cut back' - just take out any dead or diseased wood and crossing branches. Dont do it until late June/early July or you'll run the risk of it contracting Silver Leaf Disease.
It certainly looks ok from here and its shape works really well with the foliage around it - but as it's obviously been around a few years it can probably do with some tlc and a good feed like the rest of us, and like the rest of us the bark gets a little craggy as we get older too.
It won't last for ever, but treating it well will keep it going a while longer I'm sure

Thank you. Certainly, here's a picture of the tree. In terms of cutting back, will the tree respond well to hard cutting back or more gentle pruning?
