Begonias, Dahlias, Chrysanthemums

Hi there

As usual, I see lovely flowers on websites and decide that I must have them and worry about how I'm going to grow them later!

I'm expecting tubers for begonias, dahlias and chrysanthemums at the end of this week.  There doesn't seem to be much sign of frost here on the Isle of Man so can I just put these in containers straight away?  I've got big containers ready and I thought I would put 3 in each container, but more for the begonias.  How deep should these tubers be planted?  Anything else I should be aware of please?

Begonias should be planted just under the compost or even level with the surface. Make sure you plant them the right way up - most tubers have the old dried roots from last year attached which helps, otherwise its the saucer or dippy bit up.What kind of  begonias are you growing?

Set the pots in a sheltered sunny place to help them aclimatise or in a greenhouse or conservatory if you've got one.

Thanks Daintiness.   I've ordered Giant Exhibition Mixed Begonias so they should be really big.  Didn't realise the tubers would look like saucers!  So I plant them like I would put a saucer on the table?  I've got a good sheltered sunny place I can put them.

Do you think the dahlias and chrysanthemums should be planted in the same way?

This is a picture of begonia tubers. The ones you have ordered are going to grow to a big size so don't put too many in a pot. I (hopefully0 have also posted a picture of my trailing begonias last year. There are 3 tubers in each trough.

The above link gives good info on dahlia growing.

I have no experience of growing chysanthemums but hopefully someone else will be able to help or use the RHS website as they always offer good advice (imo)

Lol, it's hard to believe that such beautiful flowers come out of something so ugly image

Oh wow, your begonias look fantastic!  I so love the colour.  It must have been nice going home to such a lovely display outside your door.  Thanks for your help.
