Pruning old roses and vines now

Hi

I moved house recently with a very lovely but neglected garden.

Will I completely ruin a climbing or rambling rose if I cut it back hard now - we are having the walls repointed so it would be useful if we could cut it back. The rose is very leggy and surrounded with ivy which I am also trying to remove and only a few of the stems of the roses have any leaves?

Also I have an old vine which is completely overgrown and the supports have fallen over. Some of stems have leaves but a lot of it is dead. Again if I cut it back now will I completely ruin it? I know I won't get any fruit for a couple of years - that is OK.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

    Hi Fiona image

What an exciting project you have!

Can you post some pics of the rose and the vine on here to give us a bit more information?  To post a picture on here you have to click on the green tree icon on the toolbar at the top of where you type your post and then follow the instructions.image

I'm told it doesn't work for tablets and phones, but does for PCs and laptops image
