what to have when bluebells die down ?

Peanuts3Peanuts3 Posts: 759

Any ideas what I could plant in a border when the bluebells die down.  I planted some michaelmas diasy kind of plant last year (hand me down from friend) but I noticed it started shooting up but has then been smothered by the bluebells, so has pretty much disappeared.

The border looks lovely this time of year but how do I achieve that all year plants in flower look at this rate, it will still be a month before all the bluebells have died back and then there is just bare earth all summer / winter...

Any advice, what do you do ? anyone solved this problem ?

I'd plant hardy geraniums in amongst them - they die down in the winter and just start to regrow around the time that the bluebells start to flower - by the time the bluebells start to die down the geraniums will be bulking up and will cover the dying leaves, and then the geraniums wlll flower all the summer - if you want to keep the blue theme going Geranium 'Rozanne' is a very good one and the bees love it. image
