HELP,my new garden is very exposed to strong winds and coastal rainfall,i need advice as to what plants/shrubs or small trees to plant, all the stuff that i have planted so far has died from wind burn
one thing to remember is that windy has a huge desiccating effect. We're on a hill in North Devon, only 10 miles from the Atlantic. Factor in the drying of the wind and don't just rely on " it only rained yesterday " kinda thinking. Good luck.
I don't know if you can get it on catch up on the bbc, but a few weeks ago there was a spot where Joe Swift visited a coastal garden where the owners had used Olearia as a hedge to block the wind from the sea. The results were spectacular. You can buy olearia in bulk from scotplants for use as hedging. If you can block the wind the range of plants you can grow in the micro climate is amazing.

Take a look about and see what thrives. You may need to protect the young plants until they are sturdy.
Not everything you plant needs to be ornamental. Blackthorn and hawthorn will do well.

Escallonia and Grisolinia fare well by the sea. Hippophae rhamnoides , ( sea buckthorn ) too.
