Cucumbers Wilting and Dying

GlitzyGlitzy Posts: 40

I bought my cucumber plants from two different nurseries this year, already lost two.

They start shrivelling from the bottom up and then die completely.

What am I doing wrong?

Are there any easier varieties for beginners?

That happened to me last year. Someone advised planting them on a little mound of earth to let the water drain. Then when the weather got warm I just pushed some seeds into the ground outside in different places and it worked! A bit on the late side. They were Marketmore.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Hi, Glitzy; sad news about your 'cues - earlier in the spring several contributors to this forum were singing the praises of "Marketmore" which did well for me after a hesitant start! Eventually I was picking 6-8" cues from amongst the lower foliage of a holly tree over 7' of the ground!! (fortunately not the prickly type!). Persevere, and you should enjoy some fresh-picked, home-grown salads.

Yep - my trusty 'Grower's Guide' says to plant on a little mound and let the water drain away down the sides.  Also it says in its usual dry tone, 'cucumbers are not a bog plant', and so while I try to water them a bit each day, I don't give them too much, and I don't fret if there's a day where they go without.
