I moved into a new house 2 months ago and have what my mum has told me is an escallonia. The gentleman I bought the house from was a really keen gardener, but one of the main reasons for him selling it is his age and his inability to tend to it in the same way that he used to.
The escallonia's are planted along the top of a cornish dry stone wall, which forms a border to a pavement so having a thick screen is a priority. The house is 20 years old, and I expect that these have been there for all of this time.
They were very leggy, and thin, mostly growing out of the top with very little green lift further down the plant. Its very thin to see through.
At the back end of September I gave it a trim, but having been eyeing up my neighbours bushes I now have hedge envy and want to do what I can do thicken mine up.
The pics below show what I cut off and how it still stands.

Flowers would be nice, but my priority is thickness for the time being!
Does anyone have any advice for what I should do and when? Can this give me the thick privacy screen that I'm after?
Thanks for any advice!
Miles
