Do you know if the buttercups are creeping buttercup or meadow buttercup? Creeping buttercups are low growing, whereas meadow buttercups have tall flower stems. If it is creeping buttercup it can be a sign of poor drainage. Whether you dig it up or use weedkiller I would aereate your soil this autumn with a hollow tiner. Check the pH of your soil as creeping buttercup prefers acid soil, perhaps apply some lime this autumn if it has a low pH.
