elder removal
Hi we have a conifer hedge all round our very windy garden which we are gradually replacing with mixed hedging. Our problem is the elders which keep returning. These grow about four feet per day, or so it seems, and despite cutting them right back to the base they still shoot faster than we can deal with them. We try to garden as organically as poss and have free range hens running loose so any nature safe suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks Sue

Why do you want to get rid of them? They certainly fit the description of mixed hedging.
You do know they are the Witch's Tree and there is a lot of folklore attached to them?
Hi Welshonion thanks for your reply to our elder problem. We do make wine with the flowers and the berries but they are just taking over a bit like the triffids they seem to be marching through the garden. We don't want to get rid of them completely, just control them! I don't know much about the folklore, I will have to research that, it sounds interesting. Thanks again
