Forest Pansy Tree - cercis canadensis

does anyone know this plant?  I got one by mail order (bare rooted, dormant) about 3 weeks ago, and planted it immediately, but so far there is absolutely no sign of life - not even a hint of a leaf bud.  Is it normal for it to be so late coming into leaf?  I'm quite concerned because the roots were completely bare (no soil/compost around them at all) and had been very severely cut back.  The stems don't look dry or dead - so I don't know what to think.

I'm afraid I'm not the most patient of gardeners - I want it to perform NOW!!!

I'm in the SE by the way, and everything else here is way ahead of time!

  • I had one the same and complained and they said another would be sent. Still waiting!

Not Thompson & Morgan by any chance????

I don't think it did mine much good in that it was packaged in a brown paper sack, which encouraged the postman to cram it through the letter box!!

My more established ones are just breaking bud now. They are late openers. Bare root plants always take a while to leaf, so keep that in mind.

Thanks Blairs - that's reassuring.  I did flag it up to the suppliers in the form of a question - ie is it normal for it not to be doing anything yet - so if it doesn't get going in the next couple of weeks I will ask them to refund/replace.  I will just have to try to be patient!

I used to have one of these but it was so tender that I just composted it. It would only grow and look nice if I kept it in the conservatory. Any wind, any cold and it would look a complete mess.

Yes, you'd think something with Canadensis in its name would be a bit more butch.  I had one, supplied bare rooted.  Soaked the roots, planted it out and it grew for one summer and then turned up its toes the following winter.
