Peat you really don't like hostas do you.   I presume you've already met my mother-in-law!!

Absolutely.  Sometimes it feels like I carry four times as much crap out of our house to the bins or the dump (sorry 'recycling centre') than I bring in, so it must sneak in of its own accord!

I have Hosta Orange Marmalade planted between ornamental grasses. Don't plant two prima donnas together. Sometimes we need something demure to show off something more worthy.

Forget the gaudy multi-coloured leaved varieties and go for hostas with scented flowers - they beat lilies into a cocked hat as far as I'm concerned.

Hostafan, I have planted the hostas at the front a border that has trees at the back and shrubs in the middle and I will put shorter things of interest at the front.  There are no prima donnas there at the moment, unless you count the Fatsia Japonica, which I have a soft spot for!  But I don't think it will compete with the hostas exactly.  Sadly, the snails are the prima donnas here image.  Must go to Aldi for some cheap beer for snail pubs.

...like this one perhaps...?  not a Hosta lover but I don't mind one grown in a container like this... I find the multi coloured leaves looks rather brash for my taste... this is sieboldiana 'Elegans'... a fairly popular variety...

In respect of the original question, 'can you be brutal to hostas'?

My answer would have to be, 'YES ! ANYTIME' !

They ARE good as a sacrificial plant for passing snails and other molluscs tho'.
