Prunus leaves die back

image

Hi all. Please can someone help diagnose the problem with my flowering cherry. It was planted in the autumn of 2012 and did very well last year. This year it didn't flower very well and the leaves are now dying back. I can't see any canker on the tree.

i attach some photos

many thanks

  • I have the same problem.  This is the third year in a row it has happened.  It blossoms very well, then after the blossom goes the leaves bud and start to open but them wither and fall off - they actually look like they are burnt.  The first year a garden centre recommended to give it a good watering and farmyard manure, which I did and it recovered - got new leaves.  However it happened again last year - so I did same again.  Unfortunately here we are again - I don't know if I should treat it with something else or what??

It's a bacterial canker which they are prone to.  You can prune off the dead bits and burn them.  You can get a fungicide spray from the garden centre to apply late summer.  I have tried the cutting off method but it comes back every year somewhere else.  I am considering removing our tree but every year I 'give it another chance'.

  • Many thanks for your response.  It it is like the previous years, the leaves come back in a few weeks and then are ok.  I will get some fungicide and put it on at the end of the summer.  Is there a particular one I should look for?

Many thanks for your replies. i thought that's what it was. i had a tree a few years ago with the same disease and ended up removing it as I couldn't cure it. I suspect I will have to do the same with this one.
