An old thread but perhaps some useful information.
I one had an Acer palmatum Atropurpureum which had an unfortunate accident when a workman caught it with his ladder and ripped off the growing shoot. It was only a couple of feet high at the time and had only been planted a couple of months previously. I let it continue growing and it formed a clump of about 4 x 5 feet in 10 years. It's natural mature dimensions are about 20 feet tall by 18 feet wide. Perhaps the answer is to prune out the tip when young.
