Seedlings

Is it possible to grow gladioli from seed and if so what do i need to know.  I've hung on to the seed from last years flower heads.  Can I use these?

Yes, but it will take years to grow to flowering size.  Note how long the little bulbils take to flower and you will get some idea.

If you have mixed colours, be aware you may not get a 'nice' gladioli from all your trouble as they will have cross-bred.

  • Thanks for that chaps.  Had no idea that the length of time would be so long. I don't suppose if you know if cowslip can be grown from seed as well?

Yes cowslips can be grown from seed.  The seeds need to be really ripe and sown in the autumn - see here http://wildseed.co.uk/species/view/106
