Basal cutting delphiniums

Fishy65Fishy65 Posts: 2,276

Earlier this week (Monday) I took two cuttings from my delphinium. There were only two available and one looked too long (about 10") but thought I'd chance it.The shorter one seems to have taken quite nicely but the other looks dead.OK my question is...after putting a clear plastic bag over both to retain moisture, how long must this bag remain over the cutting? The first few days while it becomes established or for longer?

Incidentally they are planted in a mixture of compost and garden soil (about 50/50).This is the first time I've ever done basal cutting and quite pleased I seem to have even one potential new plant.

Many thanks for your very helpful and expansive reply Mike,it is very much appreciated  image  I didn't realise it could take as long as that and will keep the cutting under its plastic bag while making sure it receives fresh air.It looks a bit pathetic sitting there on its own the poor thing. The lengths we go to!!

I think our posts crossed in cyber space Mike lol. Yes the cutting is maybe 5",it has one small leaf at the tip which appears to be growing. The actual stem of the cutting is 'springy' as it would be on the parent plant,as opposed to the dead (or dying) one.I'm assuming that's a good sign? Once again my friend, many thanks for your help.
