I have for the last few years started my onion sets off in deep plug trays in the greenhouse usually about the beginning of March then planting out at the end of the month.
I do exactly the same as Colin but use standard modules. Since starting sets off this way in the GH, I've always had good crops and no problem with birds pulling them up.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
