Lifted onion sets

Has anyone got a solution to prevent birds lifting my onion sets?

I covered mine over with a net cloche until the green shoots came through.

I have for the last few years started my onion sets off in deep plug trays in the greenhouse usually about the beginning of March then planting out at the end of the month.

Since doing this I do not get the bird problem

I do exactly the same as Colin but use standard modules.  Since starting sets off this way in the GH, I've always had good crops and no problem with birds pulling them up.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thanks all for your suggestions I will do the cane and string idea now and start them off in modules next year.
