Scratch and sniff. Nothing else smells like elder, very strong and pungent

Thanks, I have the sambucus variety elsewhere and it is really lovely in flower I didn't realise they were related! Maybe I should get rid of it  - I don't want to attract pests - but I thought it might work on a dark N facing fence that overlooks an ugly building - thug like qualities might be useful for this spot.

I'll give it a go on the dark fence if it can grow there without any fuss then it is welcome!

Well, if you're going to keep it you'd better learn a bit more about it  http://www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.uk/apothecary/the-elder-tree - it can be very useful as well as decorative, but watch where you fall asleep on Midsummer's Eve image
