Should I just re-sow my seeds?

Either my memory is as hazy as fog or I've never had that much of bad luck with seeds. I planted most mid March and most have not emerged. Curious I dug through one pot to check if the seeds could of rotted but found the Pansy seed still there, albeit a darker shade of brown (do they go darker when wet? image).

My second batch of seeds is doing much better, with 4 of them (different species) coming up after a week. Should I wait a little longer? Is this normal? image

RubyL, where are these pots; it sounds to me like they may not have been warm enough?image

I've had trouble with seed germination too this year. The packet of cucumber seeds had four in it. All put in the same conditions but only one has germinated. Chillies - zero germination. Tomatoes - about a third have germinated. image

A lot depends on temperature. Certainly cucumbers and chillies need some heat. They will not germinate in a cold greenhouse in March.

I start all my Feb/mar sown ones on indoor windowsills.  starting them in the greenhouse might be ok now, as it is getting warmer, but you still have to be careful of cold nights.

A heated propagator has really helped me this year.image

Me too artjak.  I have never had cucumbers germinate from seed before, but all six plants came up.

Hello my first post just came across this forum, I sowed cucumbers on 21st April in a heated propagator and noticed that they were emerging yesterday, however I sowed runner bean seed in my blow away greenhouse in cardboard tubes three or four weeks ago and they don't appear to be doing anything, I cut one tube open to check and the seed was just sprouting. I believe that they might be "sulking". I sowed leeks back in March in the heated propagator and pricked them out into pots about a month ago, I decided to sow some more to give a succession and they sat in the seed tray for a couple of weeks without sprouting so I sowed another batch, the next day I noticed that the previous batch had emerged, that's gardening!

They are in the greenhouse which is unheated. Today I decided to throw half of the ones that didn't germinate and replace them. From the bigger seeds I saw they were virtually unchanged.
In fact with the Nasturtium I decided to go all out. I grabbed an unused trough, filled half with compost and put all remaining seeds of all 3 species I have. image

  • i planted over 100 hundred chilli seed sand almost all worked , i kept them nice and warm next to the fire
