Floppy peony

I was recently given a peony - Sarah Bernhardt which I have planted into a border.  It's stems are floppy which apparently isn't unusual for this plant but today I noticed that the base of the main stem is rotten.  However there is a new shoot growing adjacent to it.  Should I dig up the plant, cut out the rotten stem or leave it altogether.  Any advice appreciated.

..well, I would cut out the rotten stem and then leave the plant alone... I wouldn't dig it up... it's possible the stem suffered some wind rock which damaged it... as you have noted it's one that does need staking, which is a shame as it's difficult to hide the stakes....yet it's often advertised as having 'sturdy stems'.... well they are sturdy but they flop.... otherwise it's a real beauty, one I used to grow but no longer have... as a bonus it has the most glorious autumn colour to the foliage... look out for that come October...

  • Peony's don't like to be disturbed so don't dug it up. Simply cut off the damaged stem.

He he - David K!!!!!! I guess by digging it up I meant removing the plant altogether in case of some horrid disease that may spread to other plants.
