Rambling roses and conifers

I have five 6ft conifers acting as a wind break in my garden which are well past their best. Rather than go to trouble of digging them out and replacing them given they provide shelter for another part of the garden I was considering getting a rambling rose to climb over them. Is this a good or bad idea? If good, any recommendations for a good rose that will handle a windy spot?

Sounds like a good idea to me.  David Austin has good info on roses - the most vigourous ramblers i know are rambling rector, pauls himalayan musk and kiftsgate.

As you say the conifers are 6' tall I expect you keep them pruned to this size, if so would this affect the choice of rose you get?
