Do you know if rootstock can be purchased?

Hi, we're going to have a go at grafting an apple tree! Does anyone know if it is possible to buy suitable rootstock from garden centre? Called two and neither have any. Is this something one can only buy online? We're in Nottinghamshire and the hunt for rootstock is on!

If you Google 'Buying rootstock for fruit trees'  two nurseries come up immediately.  I'm sure there are more.

Thanks welshonion. None of the many listed ones seem to be near us. Have called eight places now and no one seems to stock it.  Looks like it'll be an online puchase.

The alternative is to buy a cheap young tree which has already been grafted on to the rootstock you want, then graft onto that.  At this time of the year I would look at buying a potted tree rather than a bare-root.  At least that way you are guaranteed a living rootstock. image

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Is the tree you want to graft, a self pollenator, if not you will need another, different tree to go with it.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
