Planting in a 30" x 12" square container

ReneRene Posts: 1

2 years ago, I bought 3 x  30" x 12" deep containers, because I had heard that clematis likes a cool deep run.   All my clematis died.  Its evident that the depth of 30" is no good, as probably the watering went straight down to the bottom.

i I have bought some Philadelphus instead (more hardy) but realise that I have to make the planting depth shallower, so am thinking of taking out about 15" of compost, putting some sort of barrier in, sprinkling with water-retentive crystals and planting in my Philadelhus.    In this way it would be able to reach the water when I watered.    I would love someone to give me some advice or tips about this please.    Thanks, Rene.

What sort of philadelphus, mine have grown to about 15ft tall, they are big shrubs and need to be in the ground. Clematis also like a deep root run, i dont think 15inch is deep enough. You would dig a hole almost that deep to plant one in. They are very hungry plants. 30inch deep would be better, but not for philys. (Unless there is a dwarf one)
