Please help - weed taking over the garden!

Hi there

i hope someone can help as I don't have any gardening knowledge at all yet! We bought a house last year and the garden was extensive and massively overgrown with 4 ponds hiding underneath it all!  We have since cleared the garden and removed all ponds and would like to re landscape it now.

However, we seem to have this weed which I can't identify. It grows thick and fast and looks like a green carpet, although the surface of it is only an inch from the ground. It's bright green in colour and has lots of individual leaves which are no more than a few mm in diameter. It's growing along our entire path where the path meets the wall and has also carpeted completely around a plum and apple tree. It doesn't seem to grown on or through the grassy areas, just anywhere there's a space!

It's already growing into our neighbours garden as well and they've been trying to kill it off with boiling water.

I have no pics as yet but can post one tomorrow. If anyone has any ideas on what it is or how to treat it, we'd be very grateful indeed.

Many thanks in advance

It sounds like the Mind you own Business plant - have a look at the pics on here and see what you think http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/plant_pages/868.shtml

My mum used to grow that in pots indoors,  Baby Tears, I loved it but had no ideas it was an outdoor plant and haven't seen it for years.  The things you learn on here never ceases to amaze me image

It can be lovely used around a pond, in a fern garden, in cracks in paving and in lots of other places and if it's not doing any harm it's often best to learn to love it - at least it doesn't grow tall, it covers shady places where other plants don't want to grow and it stops other more unsightly weeds getting a hold, but as you've found it spreads like mad - if it's where you don't want it treat it with a glyphosate weedkiller.

I just thought I'd add that even without a picture you gave a brilliant description - I was able to visualise it so that's how I could make a pretty good guess.  You're obviously very observant - that's very important in a gardener - enjoy making your new garden and please don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions image
