Tiny flesh coloured mites in soil

Last year we had a wooden sandpit converted into a raised bed and had some compost delivered and loaded in.  When I went to dig it over I found there were hundreds of tiny flesh coloured mites all the way through the compost.  In a matter of seconds of being disturbed they were all climbing up my wellies!  Was going to grow veg but decided to use it for flowers last year instead. (The compost was used in other areas of garden but no sign of them there)  Dug it over again yesterday and seems clear but wondering if maybe too early for them - last year I think it was around June.  I'd like to start planting potatoes and carrots now but wonder if I should treat the soil with anything first? - and does anyone know what they're likely to be?
