Where to plant climber

I've recently moved in to a house and have a west facing (rather unsightly) wall that I'd like to cover with a climber (or two). As you can see from the photo it is surrounded by a path as I'd like to cover most of the wall I would imagine pots wouldn't be big enough to plant in. Would it be ok to lift a couple of the path stones and plant directly in to the ground? Any advice welcome! Please ignore the shabby old bench, it was there when we arrived and haven't got round to tipping it yet!

I'd rub that wooden seat down and paint it  a cream colour, and then buy/make something like this

to place around it, paint it a darker colour (Cuprinol Seagrass is my current fave but others are available) , and plant clematis, honeysuckle, jasmine in the tubs.  You won't see the different coloured bricks and you'll have the prettiest arbour to sit in and enjoy your new garden image

  • Oooh thanks for that, looks perfect. I'll get some prices and see what's what, although the bench will have to be replaced unfortunately as it's rotten

  • Thanks Verdun, the cheapest option is most attractive to me atm image
