    I wouldn't worry about the slaggy bit. Get stuck into that one and a half acre paddock. I would kill for a piece of land like that. Start with a shelter belt or hedging around it.

  • As far as I know you should prune 'em in the dormant winter months. I didn't take off the lowest branch of my six footer this year cos of the mild winter but next year that has had it! Mine has flowered every year since I planted it five years ago, grown from 2' to 6' in that time.

    You might kill for it Fidget, but when I look at it, I wonder if it will kill me first.  I am actually delighted that you are all telling me to plant it in the paddock because I need trees, and Mr. Bee is most conservative in his ideas about budget.  I am indeed starting with a boundary, and have been telling him that although the boundary will be expensive, once I have the beds, the actual plants I can manufacture cheaply, by dividing, and sowing seeds, and taking cuttings.
