This is my second attempt nobody replied. I have a 12 yr old acre with fine feathery leaves. It has always been in a pot in ericasious soil. I have potted on over the years and it is now in a very lath one. Some of its branches seem to has died over the last couple of years although I feed regularly. Any ideas what is going on, I could not afford to replace it, and I love it

A photo would help. If it has been in the same place for 12 years happily then has something else changed? Perhaps a tree or hedge has been removed? Acer palmatum does suffer from branch death, normally as the result of wind or drainage issues.
Not easy to answer without knowing about your particular Acer, Sue. However, has it been exposed to cold winds and is it exposed? This will certainly affect foliage.
I was told by a tree surgeon that acers don't take kindly to being pruned and tend to sulk - has anyone experienced this? I have a small dark red acer, don't know the variety, which seems to have died at the top, so I pruned out the dead branches but it still looks very sorry for itself
Any advice on what to feed it with would be welcome. The comments above about last winter's rain may be partly responsible as this one is more exposed than the others, which seem to be fine. I'll try and find a picture of my sad one!
