Weeds!

Is there a common weed that just looks like a very tall blade of Grass? These are sprouting up in my new borders and am struggling to identify them and want to make sure they are weeds before I start pulling them! Also... Best (preferably organic) way to deal with a dock weed?

  • I can't post a pic unfortunately image they are single blades, around 6-8'' tall... Dotted all over the border. They have grown too fast to be anything I've seeded, and there were no plants there last year so I'm pretty sure it's a weed of some kind... Possibly from the manure I used?

I have twitch, couch grass, in a few places and that appears as sigle blades at the start of the season

And I always get a good crop of grass with the horse droppings

  • These are in the front garden.. I only feed the birds at the back, but it could well be the manure! I really wish the forum had a way to post photos via a mobile device!

My money is on the couch grass which nut suggested.  Gently dig down on one and see if the blade is connected to a horizontal white/brown root to confirm.  If so, you need to carefully remove all of that although spot treatment of the blades with glyphosate sometimes kills it.  If you break the root whilst cultivating the soil, each piece grows - it's almost as bad as bindweed in that way.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
