I've used a scythe, rather more than 35 years ago now though. Used it to cut the edges of hay fields and sweep the grass out from the hedge at the same time. Once you get the rythem right it's quite a soothing action. The scythe does have to be sharp though. And then I moved from a 19th century farm to a 20th century one
Had our landlord come around to look at fixing a damp patch, commended our garden, and said we could turn the lawn into a veg patch! Truly surprised! I'm quite happy for it to just be some grass though!

There you go then, it always pays to ask the questions, not all landlords are bogey men sometimes you get a pleasant surprise. Happy gardening
