ID please... bit vague

in Plants
I was walking home from work, and there aren't very many gardens where I live, but there is this one cottage who have a lovely front garden, absolutely crammed with life, but they have this tree I've never seen before, unluckily for you I couldn't get a photo without being spied by them in their living room watching telly...
So here's a description to the best of my knowledge...
Not a big tall tree, but established and bushy. Dark bark, with the most stunning purple foliage... not like cherry blossom, almost like heather? It's a very dark purple and very little green, dark leaves...
I'm sure that's of absolutely no help to anyone, but it's such a stunning little tree, I'd love to know for future reference!

I really wouldn't be expert enough to guess at this, but I would guess that if you were bold enough to enquire, there is a 99% chance that the owners would be sufficiently flattered to tell you! That is, of course, if they planted it themselves. We have a tree in our front yard which people ask about, and I haven't the foggiest, except that my MIL said it was Australian. They might even let you take a picture to show the forum if they didn't know its name. My parents loved it when anyone stopped to notice things in their front garden!
ooooh I'm not sure I'm brave enough to ask, mostly because I basically oggle their garden every single day, I think they must think I'm mad!... Oddly enough I never seen them working on it though... I might try and sneak a wee photo tomorrow on the way down though...
If their garden stands out from all the rest, then chances are they are keen on gardening. And if they are keen on gardening, imitation will be the sincerest form of flattery, but at the same time, I think I would be far more likely to go and ask nowadays that I would have been when I was younger, so I know what you mean. Presume you have already googled your description words and not found any familiar images?
Ceonothus or Cotoneaster have bluish blooms and neat little dark green leaves, you could try googling those but I would not have thought they would be flowering yet?
Hi sweet pea
Are you sure it a tree ?
The reason I'm asking that is because you have stated its not a large tree but well esbablished
Could it be a shrub and if so it could be an evergreen type
Can you view it on google maps street view?
Could it be a lilac? It's the only tree that I know that may be smaller with purple blooms that may be a bit heather looking?
I am of course probably wrong as not very knowledgeable but just a thought
Knock on their door and chat with them. I' sure they will be please to answer your question. Keep us inform.

This is the street map view, and it's the house with the black frames to the right. The tree in question is not the one climbing up the wall, but just in front - not the very front... I don't think that's clear enough for an ID though!
I'm really not brave enough to talk to them! Maybe i'll be lucky enough to catch them in the garden sometime soon, then I could ask a bit more confidently.
