ideas for killing off bamboo

I was just wondering whether anyone has any good ideas, of how to get rid of bamboo. I have tried digging it up but it is very hard work with the shoots being so tough and having spread quite a bit.

I have bamboo coming from nextdoor artychris and I managed to dig it out which was hard work, but it hasn't come back yet so well worth a go if you can dig it..... I would like to know how I can get rid of two large clumps between ours and their fence? removing the fence to dig is not an option because we rent. So I shall see what other people say, maybe I will find something to get rid of it to!

I might show this thread to my OH who wanted a bamboo and I put my foot down, he couldn't understand why
