Bulbs go completely under the soil and buried so that the soil or compost above them is twice the depth of the bulb itself. Shoot end upwards, root end downwards but they find their way if you can't tell and get it wrong.

Iris rhyzomes should be planted on top of the surface, anchored by their roots. The rhyzome needs to be baked by the summer sun to get the best flowering next season.
I planted exactly like you said and my pots flowered amazingly from February to now, still some pansies in flower. I want to repeat this in October, but should I tip the bulbs out and sort them or leave them in their pots and iignore them?
I have a container garden this year and want to make the most of that space and get my bulbs out. i have dutch iris, peacock orchids and gladeoli. how many layers can i plant..shall i just go for it and see how they do or stick to two and pack them out?
If you have enough of each to fill a pot I think they look better as single varieties. That way, once the iris die back you could plant a top layer of summer bedding such as pelargoniums but if you want your iris to flower again, you need to feed them and leave the foliage for at least 6 weeks to feed the bulbs for next year's show.
The others will flower later so maybe put a layer of pansies or other hardy bedding plants to extend the season while you wait for the bulbs to come through and flower.

Can I ask is it better to change compost each time you are putting new plants into pots?
