Effects of tree pruning on root growth
We have a cherry tree, and neighbours, which is only about 4 years old, adn I would say about 5 m high. Neighbours are worried that its roots might eventually damage supply/drainage pipes in front of the house, which are possibly about 6 6 -8 metres away.
Do I have to worry?
Can I keep the tree pruned to a height of about 4 metres in order to slow or stop root growth?
Many thanks.

Hi i have the same worry with my neighbours same type and sized tree.Although it is away from the house the roots have completely pushed up our heavy paving slabs on that side.I know my water and drainage pipes go along under that path which is aworry.
Also my courtyard gets little sun as tree branches spread blocking out sunshine. His garden is in bright sun all day! I cant grow much mainly pots tomove about.Extra problem his house is rented and landlady unapproachable.Cutting anything hanging into my garden would make no difference.Iv checked my house insurance covers damaged drains utilities. its a fingers crossed and hope no probs there but that doesnt solve dangerous raised paving. So im suffering ,they are not _tottally unfair.
So good on you that you are thinking of your neighbour and keep good relationship between you. Both will have peace of mind and be able to smile and bear no grudes.work together, even share cost to put right if helps both. Good luck.
By the way Spirelli
Im interested in all replies you get to your original question,
As this would help me to know what the outcome would be.
Thanks

This is the advice from the RHS about trees near buildings and any potential problems. It's worth noting the advice that hasty removal of trees can result in even more problems due to 'heave'. https://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/Profile.aspx?pid=225
