Moving bulbs
My mum has lots of daffs & hyacinths etc. in pots & troughs on the sunny balcony of her flat and now they've finished flowering, wants to use the space for salads, carrots etc. Can she (well, to be more accurate, can I) remove them from the pots and heel them in somewhere to continue their season's growth? Or is there another solution?

Yes, this was often done to make room for summer bedding. Just give them a good watering to settle the soil around the roots and try not to damage too many roots when moving them.
Thanks - I'll try that. Next problem will to decide where to put them - she won't want them visible in the little patch of garden!
Right. Done it. Dug over a border (that the council are supposed to look after and put them there. Mind you, I had to remove a variety of weeds, rubbish and stones, including a whole brick and half a breeze block. And you only have to go down 4" to find the clay!
New potting compost to supplement the old in the containers, ready for her to sow some veg. Job done. Tea and chocolate waffle
