Hosta Problem

image

One of my Hostas seems to have leaves that keep going rotten - mushy and then just falling off!!  They don't appear to be eaten and all the others are fine.

I have attached a pic so you can see, it is the plant on the left and has had a new leaf which is now going rotten again image

On advice from Verdun I have checked for slugs/snails and there are none and now I have moved them into the GH.

I don't know I the varieties as they were a bargain from Aldi, maybe that's the problem, I don't know.  I just don't want my first attempt at Hostas to die image

Any advice please?

Thanks Philippa, they are in the GH now so should dry out a bit, I haven't watered them it was just rain and it did rain quite a bit during the night.

I thought Hostas like a moist environment? Mine are in compost that's constantly wet And they do fine. They're from poundland, 4 for £1, and I can't resist a bargain! image If the leaves are constantly wet or touching the wet compost, then they may rot.

The leaf was on the edge Ryan. I'm actually wondering now if that is why, because the edge of the pot was wet?

Quite possibly. Many leaves when touching something wet rot. I wouldn't put them in the GH, as they're fully hardy and quite forgiving. Trying watering directly into the soil, or if it rains, wiping the sides of the pot maybe? I hope thatd do the trick image

I'll bring them out of the GH again in the morning Ryan, thanks image

Tracey - one of the gardening tricks i have been trying to teach myself is to focus on the positives. Llke you, I fret over the things with the problems, rather than the 3 lovely healthy plants you have on the go.  Certainly for cuttings, once i convinced myself that over 50% survival = success - then i became much more confident in my abilitiesimage

Thank you Chicky, I will try and do that then.  Although thinking about it now it won't be my  first failure as some of my chilli seeds didn't germinate, although over 50% did so following your rule I'm a success image

Right, here js what I am going to do, bring 2 out of the GH and leave 2 in, including the poorly one and see what happens image
