What is eating my bergenias?

I love bergenias. I have twelve different sorts and have never had a problem until now. But something is eating huge semi-circular chunks out of the edges of the leaves. I don't think it's slugs (no trails, pelletts used) and haven't found any caterpillars on nightly searches. Surely it's too early for vine weevils? Help please!
