shrubs for shade

Jennie 3Jennie 3 Posts: 33

Hi - my fence faces northwest but gets the sun for an hour or so early morning this time of the year before the trees opposite get their leaves on.

I'm looking for a small (2-3ft w & h) plant, flowering mid to late summer with either yellow, white or pale coloured flowers which will stand out on this shady side.

The ground is fairly moist & I seem to grow most plants so think my soil must be fairly neutral/slightly acid.

Would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Jennie

You could try a rhododendron/azalea's or one of the skimmia's as a small shrub, geranium, epimedium. polygonatum, i'ts a difficult spot for sure.

Hypericum would grow there. It's quite a brash colour of yellow which I personally don't like but it flowers at that time of year and has black berries later. Gaultherias also flower in summer - pale pink or white - and also have big berries later which usually last through winter as the birds tend not to go for that colour.  I have a white one one in a similar situation. They used to be called Pernettya. Potentillas will also take quite a bit of shade and come in whites and soft creamy yellow as well as the bright sulphur-y one. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Podophyllum, Epimedium, Trillium, Rodgersia, Paris, Brunnera, Pachyphragma, Cyclamen, Helleborus, etc.

    Don't be afraid of shade

Peirs would be a good choice as they would give you pink, cream and silver foliage. Possibly look also to plant some variegated hosta's in that area. The Pieris will require an acidic soil so a soil test would be prudent. Good gardiening
