Any reliable multi purpose will do the job-do not start just yet it- is a bit early still.

  • I wondered whether I need to mix some soil based compost with multi purpose, as beans need a  lot of moisture. ie John inns No2 with multi purpose, maybe half and half, what do you think?image

I have just put the seeds in pots in my greenhouse to start them off.image

Sound good to me perhaps- JI no3  would be better-they do not like low temperatures hence my reason for saying hold off-with a bit of luck summer will arrive shortly and they will be fine.

I'm planning to grow dwarf french beans in containers this year.  I usually grow the full size ones in the veg patch but I have run out of room.

I've planted mine out, but under cloches. They're dwarf Borlotti, and have been in the cold frame for a couple of weeks. Might do another sowing and try them in pots as well.

The half & half  loam and general purpose mixture is what I use for beans in tubs or other containers, with a good handful of vermiculite to help drainage - this has been sucessful for many years - however, it does not keep the slugs nor the sparrows away from them!!
