thank you allan4711 iv had a look but it did not tell me what kind of spray to use to protect against bugs

    What sort of bugs?

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • If you only have room for one tree you could try a family tree. I have a one from blackmoor with 3 different eating varieties grafted onto it.

Been in the garden 2 years and already getting fruit from it image

For plums i personally don't think you can beat Victoria but maybe that's just me. great off the branch, cooked or in jam image

If you are only having one apple tree, you need to make sure there is a suitable pollinator nearby. Otherwise a family tree with three compatible varieties on might be a better option.Victoria plums are self fertile and can be grown on their own.

  • we have apple scrumptious and they are very good for small garden.

If you're short of space I'd definitely go for a fan, espalier or cordons trained against a wall, west-facing for preference.  Having done it in the last couple of years I reckon espalier training (probably the most productive for apples)  isn't as difficut as it's made out to be.

If you go for a family tree I'd be interested to hear how you get on in a few years, as I've been advised against it - one variety tends to dominate the other(s), or so I'm told.

I think fans are recommended for plums, but I have no real experience of it.
