seedling compost

  • I have used Jacks magic recently and found it to be much better than others that I have tried. Miracle grow multipurpose that I bought earlier this season has no substance and dries out quickly and then is hard to re wet.

Hi. We have started using Jack's Magic this year and I must admit that it has given realy good results for seed sowing (no failures even with half hardy annuals on a windowsill). Then for pricking out and also for plants in troughs and containers. I like the fact that sand has been added and the lack of "nuts" as I call the hard lumps and twigs. Might need a little more watering than some other multi composts but that is a good trade off for us. Hope this helps.

Jack's Magic compost is really poor compared to Levingtons classic. All the seedlings transplanted into the Westlands have struggled survive but the Levingtons have thrived. I have calendula plants in both types of compost..The Levingtons are four time the size of the Jack's magic under exactly the same conditions. Most of the plants in the Westlands have had to be re-potted into the better compost to get them growing strongly. I will not be buying the Westlands again.

I have used Jack's Magic for everything this year. I really like the feel of it and all the plants in it are doing well. But I noticed at the weekend the GC had gone back to Levingtons.

  •  I have tried a lot of peat free composts and have experienced all sorts of problems with them from strange weeds moulds blight and even bits of broken car windscreens and tail lights so have started using jacks magic which is lovely . i would like to see a controlled trial done of all the composts available filling trays and watering them and see what grows perhaps Monty Don would like to do it?

The Which consumer magazine does such a trial, for seedlings, for growing on and for pots and containers. Jack’s Magic did not feature this year but in previous years it has been in a mid table position if I remember correctly.

For growing on, this year’s top three composts are
    Thmpson & Morgan Incredicompost£14.99 for 70L96%
    Waitrose & Partners Multi-Purpose Compost£5 for 50L89%
Westland Multipurpose Compost with John Innes

The last one scored 88% and was £7 for 60 litres.
