Lavendar novice balcony question please?

Peter MPeter M Posts: 3

Hi folks,

Sorry If this is posted in the wrong section but I couldn't find a beginners section.

Total novice with gardening. I have a small balcony but my main question is about my lavender.

We wanted something that would smell beautiful and look beautiful so we thought of lavendar. It was planted last year and has tripled in size but it only ever has one small flower and does not smell of anything in the air or even if you put your nose up to it. The only way we get an aroma is to rub it in between your fingers and then you can smell it.

Did we buy the wrong type of lavender? If so is it possible to aadd another variety to it that flowers a lot and has a strong smell?

Thanks

Lavender won't flower yet it's too early really. Depending on which variety you bought will determine when it flowers. It's well established so the new flower buds will be forming in the next month. If the label is still on the plant then we can give you an idea when it will flower. Lavender is a sensory plant when not in flower the scent is held within the leaves and only released when it's brushed against or the foliage rubbed.

Be patient and you will get results in time.

    Thank you for your answerimage

The reason I say about the flowers is because last summer it did the same thing, just one small flower and that was all it had all summer. It has flowered 3 weeks ago but again only 1 flower which has died off nowimage

I guess time will tell then. Maybe it was young last year? Has it flowered early this year? Or will it flower again?

    Thank you!

    Hi PeterM image

Tell us more about the balcony -  lavender needs plenty of direct sunshine - does it get that on your balcony?  Which way does it face and do the balcony sides keep the lavender in shade during the day?  If so that may well be the reason it's not flowering.

    Hi and thanks for responding.

The balcony has frosted glass sides so sun does come through.

The balcony has full sunlight from sunsrise to about 2pm. It is East to South facing.

We have the lavendar potted in with a twisted small tree, can't remember the name now but will get it. Not sure that matters as its thriving and growing fast.

    Cheers
