Talkback: How to sow a lawn from seed

I have an area currently covered in flagstones that I'd like to seed with grass. In the guide here it says 'Prepare the ground thoroughly prior to seeding', but does not explain how best to do this from scratch (drainage etc, soil type). Being a complete novice, I'm really not sure where to start prior to seeding.

  • yes gave me basic info as needed as I have completed horticulture lessons at college but as pointed out by others does not really go in-depth enough or refer to related topics ie aspect ph detailed prep prior to seeding
  • How come there is no answer to the question? I am curious too.
  • I have sown a new lawn but it now has a lot of weeds when can I apply weed and feed without harming the new grass

How new is 'new' larry? Think you need to give it a while before you weed n feed. I wonder why it's so weedy though? Did you use an unsuitable type of seed or is the lawn in the wrong site perhaps?

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • What do you have to do to prepare the ground before you sow the grass seed?

Verdun's given a comprehensive answer above philip. It's a good time to do this as the ground is warming up. Remember to water if you have long dry spells after sowing image
